Ryan Moore won the Wyndam with a birdie on the third hole of a sudden death playoff, to beat Kevin Stadler on Sunday at the Wyndham Championship.
Tiger Woods will compete next week in The Barclays as will Phil Mickelson, at Jersey City’s Liberty National Golf Club, the first of four PGA end of four FedEx Cup playoff events. it’s the first time Tiger has played the first leg of the event.
The qualifiers aren’t required to play: Unlike other sports, team sports in particular, if Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson decides to skip one of the first two events of the four-event playoffs, they could still play the next week because they have built up so many points during the season. The tour event made a big deal Friday of announcing that Woods had agreed to play in the Barclay’s this week, the first of the playoff events.
More volatility this year: The tour addressed this after Singh only had to complete 72 holes in the Tour Championship to wrap up the title. The tour reduced the field of the first three playoff events and changed the points system to reset points only before the Tour Championship finale, rather than before the first of the playoff events. Now, any of the top five players going into the Tour Championship can mathematically win the FedEx title with a win in the event, and players 6 through 10 could win the $10 million with a Tour Championship victory and the top five players struggling.
